The City of Erie beat the Tashmoo in the grandest steamboat race on the Great Lakes

The City of Erie beat the Tashmoo with much fanfare in a steamboat race between Cleveland and Erie.

Newspaper accounts call it the grandest steamship race in maritime history. And it started in Cleveland.

Two Michigan-built passenger steamships, the City of Erie and the Tashmoo, raced 94 miles from Cleveland to Erie, Pennsylvania, with thousands of people cheering and more than $100,000 in bets.
