The Biergarten on Put-in-Bay is a great spot to sit with kids. Because it’s also home to ice cream at the Chocolate Cafe. (Laura Johnston, RocktheLake)

I think the golf carts were their favorite part.

In one day at Put-in-Bay, I took my 5- and 7-year-old up to the top of Perry’s Monument, down to Perry’s Cave, around the state park and in to an ice cream shop. But their favorite? Fighting over the front seat in the golf cart as we cruised around South Bass Island.

This is the first time the kids have ever been to the Erie Islands, and my first time for fun since 2001. Put-in-Bay seems a little shinier, with more tiki bars. But the flavor of Americana remains.

Today we’re headed to Kelleys Island, which my 5-year-old thinks belongs to my best friend, Kelly. (Yesterday I explained to her that ferry boats are real, as opposed to garden fairies.) We’ll check out the glacial grooves and ride scooters around.

What else should we do? Tell me on Facebook!
